National Staff Training Day

Mark Oldfield, Streetwise Opera's Artistic Director of Workshops, reflects on our annual staff training day which took place on 25 July 2017:

More than 40 people from our national team of workshop leaders, support workers and regional co-ordinators travelled from all of our five regions to attend our annual staff training day in London.

For the morning, we split into two groups. Streetwise Opera Progression Manager, Lucinda Meredith, led a session for support workers and regional co-ordinators to share best practice and learn from each other’s experiences during the past year. The invaluable knowledge within the team became evident and this will now nourish our future work and inform the company’s practice.

At the same time, Streetwise Opera’s Head of Training, Rowan Fenner, facilitated an interactive session for workshop leaders to share their best practice and workshop delivery tips. Key elements to facilitate an inclusive, safe and creative process were explored and greatly enjoyed.

After a picnic lunch, the afternoon began with a session led by Rachel Bull of TIPP (Theatre in Prison and Probation) for staff to gain an overview of safeguarding. Rowan then led an informative and enjoyable final session for everyone to discuss shared interests for good practice and to sing together. This concluded a valuable day of learning, sharing of ideas and celebrating the wealth of expertise amongst staff at Streetwise Opera.

Thanks go to our session leaders – Rowan, Lucinda and Rachel – and to our Arts Administrator Betsy Picart for organising it. We look forward to bringing all of our staff together again next year!
